HOUSTON, TX — Twenty years after his passing, the influence of James Dewitt Yancey—known to the world as J Dilla—remains the heartbeat of modern hip-hop. Today, that legacy is moving from the recording studio to the classroom as a coalition of foundations launches a major scholarship initiative benefiting the C. E. King Ninth and Tenth Grade Campus.

An Architect of Sound
Born in Detroit, J Dilla was more than a producer; he was a sonic architect. From his early days with Slum Village to his legendary work with Erykah Badu, Common, and A Tribe Called Quest, Yancey pioneered a “human” feel in electronic music. His signature unquantized “drunk beats” changed the way musicians perceived rhythm, bridging the gap between jazz, soul, and hip-hop.
Even as he battled Rare Blood Disease and Lupus, Dilla completed his masterpiece, Donuts, just days before his death in 2006. His perseverance in the face of illness transformed him into a symbol of undying creative spirit for the global music community.

Continuing the Legacy
To honor that spirit, the Save the Music Foundation has joined forces with the Lupus Foundation, Graham Executive Concierge Services, and Southern Flava to sponsor a dedicated scholarship drive for the students of C.E. King 9th and 10th Grade Center.
The initiative aims to provide financial support to the next generation of creators, ensuring that Dilla’s story of resilience continues to inspire young talent in the Houston area.
How to Support: The “Dilla Effect”
The community is invited to participate in two major ways:
  1. The Scholarship Shirt: Supporters can purchase an official drive T-shirt for a tax-deductible donation of $15–$25. 100% of the proceeds go directly toward scholarships for students at the C.E. King 9th and 10th Grade Center.
  2. The Sneaker Ball: Put on your best kicks for a cause! A Sneaker Ball will be held on May 2nd, 2026, at 4010 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, Texas. The event will celebrate music, fashion, and philanthropy in true Dilla fashion.
